The National Electric Safety Code (NESC®) is the application standard for safety in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of an electric utility system.

In October 2022, the 2017 edition of the code was updated and the National Electric Safety Code®—Edition 2023 was released.

We are holding five, one-day seminars around the state, which will include round-table discussion of the code changes.

Who should attend?

This event is intended for general managers, crew leaders, superintendents, supervisors, engineers, safety managers, and anyone else on your team who needs to be aware of and understand the changes. Attend and learn about code changes to ensure compliance and safety of employees and the public you serve.

2023 National Electric Safety Code®

Published exclusively by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and updated every five years to keep the code up-to-date with changes in the industry and technology, the National Electrical Safety Code® (NESC®) sets the ground rules and guidelines for practical safeguarding of utility workers and the public during the installation, operation, and maintenance of electric supply, communication lines, and associated equipment.

Notable changes to the NESC® include:

  • Small cell/communication equipment placement
  • Revisions regarding batteries, energy storage, and backup power
  • A new section for photovoltaic generating stations, accommodating large-scale solar power projects
  • Further clarification on the use of non-hazardous fiber optic cables

Learn more about the NESC® by visiting https://standards.ieee.org/products-programs/nesc/

NOTE: Participants need to bring a copy of either the printed version or a laptop/tablet with the electronic version. If registering more than one person for the same workshop, only one copy is needed per city/utility. Members of IEEE are able to purchase the 2023 NESC® at a discounted price.
