Moorhead Public Service (MPS) received the American Public Power Association (APPA) Energy Innovator Award June 14 at APPA’s National Conference. MPS received the award for its innovative and highly successful Capture The Sun® Community Solar Garden Program.
The Energy Innovator Award is a national honor by APPA to recognize utilities that have demonstrated advances in the development and application of creative, energy-efficient technologies, customer service enhancements, and operational efficiencies.
Moorhead Public Service developed its Capture The Sun® Community Solar Garden Program after identifying that many homeowners are interested in having some of their energy needs met through solar but are unable to install and maintain a solar panel system of their own. Upon a successful enrollment process in the spring of 2015, MPS constructed the first phase of its community solar garden between its existing wind turbines in north Moorhead. The value of the energy generated by the solar modules is pro-rated annually in the form of bill credits to participating customers.
MPS is expanding its Capture The Sun® Community Solar Garden in 2016 and plans to continue to expand into the future. Congratulations to Moorhead Public Service for receiving APPA’s Energy Innovator Award for this successful project!
