Events – Individual Apprentice and Journeyman

Hurtman Rescue, Pole Top Pin Insulator Change Out, and Obstacle Course

Description of Events

Event 1: Hurtman Rescue

Mean Time: 4 min. / Drop Dead Time: 6 min.
The competitor will rescue a “hurtman” mannequin that is attached to the top of a pole. Time starts on the judge’s signal with competitor standing at least an arm’s length from pole in any direction. The lineworker’s belt, hooks and rubber gloves in bag will be lying on the ground at arm’s length. NOTE: Apprentice event is simulated dead; standard work gloves acceptable.

Event 2: Pole Top Pin Insulator Change Out

Mean Time: 5 min. / Drop Dead Time: 7 min.
This event will consist of changing out the pole top insulator that is tied in with a preform wraplock with a rubber grommet. Competitor must raise/lower all material in a bag attached to the handline (including new rubber grommet). Handline must be attached to the pole when competitor gets into working position. A screwdriver may be used to remove the preform wraplock (no knife or pliers). Competitor's fall arrest must remain attached for event judge verification of proper adjustment. Note: Event will be considered de-energized and grounded; therefore, rubber gloves not required. Apprentice and Journeyman perform same event.

Event 3: Obstacle Course

Mean Time: 8 min. / Drop Dead Time: 10 min.
The obstacle course will consist of climbing up through and over crossarms, transitioning to a new position at a different level and completing a task before proceeding.

Time starts on judge's signal. The competitor will then climb a 40-foot pole equipped with three crossarms. The competitor will stop at each arm and relocate the arm-mounted device to the opposite end of the arm. The competitor may begin device transfer at the top arm or the bottom arm. The lowest crossarm will be mounted at 22 feet equipped with a drop-in pin mounted polymer 15kv tie-top insulator. The second arm mounted six feet higher, at 28 feet, will be equipped with a 15kv polymer dead-end insulator. The top arm mounted five feet above the second arm, at 33 feet, will be equipped with a polymer 100 amp 15kv fused switch mounted on an “L” bracket (moving only the switch).

Once back on the ground, the competitor shall use an extendo stick to open the switch (using the eye of the door), remove the solid blade, and bring down to the ground. After touching the blade, the competitor will reinstall the solid blade and close the switch (using the eye of the door). Climbing tools may be worn while using extendo stick as long as gaff guards are used. NOTE: Apprentice and Journeyman perform same event.
