This course is offered as supplemental training for water/wastewater operators and support staff. This comprehensive electrical training program can benefit non-electricians to improve skills and gain competency.

Understanding what electrical work can and cannot be done by a non-electrician operator or maintenance technician can present a challenge. Are you confident that the work you are assigned—or that you are assigning—can safely and legally be performed? Recognizing your limitations is the key to ensuring everyone’s safety.

What You Will Learn

This workshop includes classroom and hands-on instruction/demonstration. Participants will also tour the Marshall Municipal Utilities Water Treatment Plant. Topics to be covered include:

  • Safety Overview
    • Proper Personal Protective Equipment
    • Review National Electrical Code
    • Hazard Identification
    • Arc Flash Hazards
  • Review of the Process of How to Register with the State of Minnesota
  • What Electrical Work a Non-electrician Can Legally Do
  • Hands-on Electrical Testing & Troubleshooting Activities
  • Hands-on Lockout Tagout
  • Determining Appropriate Equipment
  • Hands-on Voltage Checks; Testing and Sizing Fuses
  • Communications
  • Overview of Electrical Prints

Skill competency will be evaluated for each participant. Upon successful completion of course, participant will receive a certificate identifying specific electrical job tasks qualified to do; with the caveat of any regulatory/legal limitations.

Lead instructor for this workshop is Tim Anderson. Tim has worked for Marshall Municipal Utilities (MMU) as an Electronics Technician since September 2017. Prior to joining MMU, Tim worked for 16 years in the private electrical industry. Tim has extensive experience with electric motor repair/rewinding, telecommunications, fiber optic splicing, industrial process controls, as well as wiring of residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
