THE DATE OF THIS WORKSHOP HAS CHANGED to JULY 14-16.

Generation School offers participants valuable classroom and hands-on instruction plus networking opportunities for generator operators and technicians. Whether a seasoned operator or just starting out in the field, all can benefit.

This year we will offer in-plant, hands-on instruction on three different engine sets: Enterprise, Cooper and Fairbanks Morse. Plus we'll tour one of Hutchinson Utilities' generation plant.

When registering, please indicate preference for hands-on instruction—which will take place at the DELANO Power Plant (Fairbanks Morse Engine) and at the GLENCOE Power Plant (Cooper & Enterprise).

NOTE: Generation School takes place at multiple locations. See below for details.

Tuesday, July 14

1:00-2:30  Basic System Maintenance—Timing of the engines, etc., Jeff Crampton, Fairbanks Morse Engine
2:30-4:00  Tour – Hutchinson Utilities' Plant 1 - Proper PPE required (see below)
5:00-7:00  Welcome Reception

Wednesday, July 15

8:30-4:00  Hands-On Training

NOTE: Participants need to select ONE of the following when registering. Participant is responsible for transportation to training location.

Location: DELANO Power Plant, 11 Bridge Avenue West, Delano
Instructor: Jeff Crampton, Fairbanks Morse Engine

Hands-on instruction at the plants may include such topics as:

  • Basic System Maintenance
  • Setting Up CB Fuel Doors
  • Combustion Tuning and Balancing
  • Pull Cards
  • Operation Scenarios (i.e., Black Start)
  • Web Deflections and Alignment
  • Additional activities as time permits

Thursday, July 16

Location: Cobblestone Hotel & Suites, 416 Prospect Street NE, Hutchinson

8:30-9:30  Power Plant Arc Flash, Dale Narlock & Ronnie Lund, Thief River Falls Municipal Utilities
Just 2 days before Thanksgiving 2019 an arc flash occurred at the Thief River Falls Power Plant. The generator was operating and an arc flash occurred, lasting over 4 minutes. Dale and Ronnie will talk about the damage it caused to the generator and other equipment in the plant, as well as the importance of relay testing.

9:45-11:45  Loss Prevention, Bob Sewell, MMUA
Bob will cover recommendations for the basic operation, protection, inspection, maintenance & testing of various types of switchgear used in applications below 600V.

11:45-12:00  Discussion Recap—What are the take-aways?, Bob Sewell, MMUA

What to Bring

PPE required for tours and hands-on training in the plants. NOTE: Ear plugs will be provided.

  • Face Mask (per COVID-19 protocol)
  • Hard Hat
  • Safety Glasses
  • Safety Footwear
  • Appropriate High-visibility Work Clothing
  • Notebook and Pen/Pencil

Registration Fee

Member Rate: $465 per person
Non-member Rate: $690 per person
NOTE: Registration fee increases $50 on June 13, 2020.

Fee includes: workshop tuition, materials, refreshment breaks, lunch on Wednesday and a certificate of attendance. Participants are responsible for all transportation and lodging.

Deadline to register is June 19, 2020.

Cancellation Policy

MMUA will issue a refund (less $30 per person) for cancellation of an advance registration, provided MMUA is notified by 4:30 pm on June 19, 2020. Sorry, no refunds issued for cancellations after June 19.

MMUA has negotiated reduced room rates starting at $108/night, not including tax. Please call the hotel directly to make reservation and ask for the "MMUA-Generation School" room block.

Certificates

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Watch for an email notification from MMUA after the event.
