Electrical Distribution Design

The 2022 Electrical Distribution Design Workshop offers participants a comprehensive and practical overview of AC principles and applications applied to the design of electric utility services for retail customers.

Participants will:

  • Review the characteristics and selection criteria for distribution transformers, overhead conductors, and underground cables, practice in customer load estimation, the sizing of service transformers, and the sizing of overhead and underground service conductors/cables.
  • Learn about voltage drop and how to meet service voltage requirements with consideration of customer demand and power factor, service conductor/cable size and length, and short-term voltage variations due to motor starting.
  • Delve into practical considerations for overhead service pole locations, NESC service span and attachment clearances, underground transformer and junction box locations, and easements.
  • Work through application exercises throughout the course, and more!

This workshop can benefit those who are relatively inexperienced in the electric utility industry or to the distribution system, as well as those with experience who want to “refresh and update” their understanding of the underlying principles of electrical distribution and its application to the design of customer services.

  • Engineering managers
  • Design engineers
  • Operations managers
  • Crew supervisors
  • Lineworkers
  • Consulting engineers

Workshop participants are encouraged to bring a laptop/tablet.
