Substation School offers valuable instruction on in-depth topics related to Substations. Participants will also get a behind the scene's tour of Rochester's newest substation built through a unique partnership with Epic Systems Corporation.

Who Should Attend?

This school can benefit individuals currently working in/on a substation, as well as other personnel interested in learning and seek to know more about substations.

Substation Design and Construction
Neil Stiller, Charles Pentek, Tyler Meiners and Jeff Kranz, Rochester Public Utilities

This session will give an overview of a partnership with Mayo Clinic Health Systems' contract company, Epic Systems, to provide power to their data storage building. Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) employees had a great deal of involvement in the project—from start to finish. This class will also cover the design and construction of RPU's new Westside Energy Station.

Tours
– Douglas Trail Substation
is Rochester's newest substation. This state-of-the-art facility, constructed for Epic Systems, highlights the opportunities that can be available through industry partnerships.

– West Energy Station (WES) began operating in 2017. This 46-MW plant features a new gas-fired reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE).

NOTE: High-visibility clothing, hard hat, safety glasses, safety toe shoes and ear muffs are required for tours.

Substation Maintenance and Inspections
Jeff Kranz, Rochester Public Utilities

Proper operation and maintenance of your substation is key to sustaining the heartbeat of your power distribution system and ensuring reliablity to your cusotmer base. Jeff will cover the industry's best practice on a variety of operational concepts and maintenance issues.

What to Bring

Because some of the training will take place outside of the classroom, participants must have the proper PPE for tours, including:

  • High-Visibility Clothing
  • Hard Hat
  • Safety Glasses
  • Safety Toe Shoes

Certificates

Participants earn hours for attendance and a certificate of achievement will be available online. Participants should watch for an email notification from MMUA.

Registration Fee

$465 per student for members; $690 per student for non-members. All fees increase $50 on March 19, 2018. Deadline to register is March 29, 2018.

Registration fee includes: Tuition, materials and supplies, noon lunch on Wednesday, refreshment breaks and certificate of achievement. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging.

Cancellations/Refunds

MMUA will issue a refund (less $30 per person) for cancellation of an advance registration, provided MMUA is notified by 4:30 pm on March 30, 2018. Sorry, no refunds issued for cancellations after March 30, 2018.
