Mutual Aid Crews Earns Praise; At Work in Lake Worth

September 15, 2017

The Minnesota municipal electric crews yesterday moved from Kissimmee to Lake Worth, Fla., just south of Palm Beach. This area has lots of damage and it’s going to take some time to get the system up and running.  After the travel and getting their bearings, the crews are expected to be hard at work today. The heat is intense and very humid. The Minnesota crews are working through it and earning praise wherever they go.

The Kissimmee Utility Authority said "The Minnesota crews were awesome! We are so appreciative of their hard work and commitment to restoring power in our community. Thank you also to the families of these lineworkers who continue to go through their normal routines back home without their husbands, boyfriends and fathers. We appreciate all of you!

In another facebook post on the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association page, a resident of Kissimmee said , "We can't thank you enough for all your help! We appreciate each & everyone of you! Be safe out there!"

The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) reported that the state’s municipal utilities have restored service to almost 600,000 customers, leaving municipal total outages as of last night at around 225,000 customers. Statewide, Florida has 2.6 million people without power. That is a quarter of the state’s electric customers, according to the American Public Power Association. Crews are still coming into Florida, many now coming from the southeast region.

Duke Energy has restored its transmission and Public Power utilities that rely on this transmission are beginning to energize their systems. Like the Minnesota crews, many Public Power crews are moving to new locations.

The DOE reported yesterday evening that there are currently 232,000 without power in Georgia, 25,000 out in South Carolina, 11,000 out in North Carolina, and 117,000 out in Puerto Rico.

There continues to be major cooperation going on amongst industry partners, as FP&L is assisting Key West and Tennessee Valley Public Power Association crews are assisting Georgia Power Company.
