Generation School offers participants valuable classroom and hands-on instruction plus networking opportunities for generator operators and technicians. Whether a seasoned operator or just starting out in the field, all can benefit.

This year we will offer in-plant, hands-on instruction Fairbanks Morse and Cooper Bessemer engine sets. Plus we'll tour Connexus Energy's Ramsey Renewable Station and Elk River's Waste Reclamation Plant.

When registering, please indicate preference for hands-on instruction. NOTE: Generation School takes place at multiple locations. See below for details.

Wednesday, April 21

NOTE: Participants need to select ONE of the following when registering. Participant is responsible for transportation to training location.

Cooper Bessemer
Location: ELK RIVER Power Plant, 1705 Main Street NW, Elk River
Instructor:  Bob Heine, New Prague Utilities Commission

Hands-on instruction at the plants may include such topics as:

  • Setting Up CB Fuel Doors
  • Combustion Tuning and Balancing
  • Pull Cards
  • Operation Scenarios (i.e., Black Start)
  • Web Deflections and Alignment
  • Additional activities as time permits

Thursday, April 22

8:30-9:30  Power Plant Arc Flash, Dale Narlock and Ronnie Lund, Thief River Falls Municipal Utilities
Just before Thanksgiving 2019 an arc flash occurred at the Thief River Power Plant that lasted more than 4 minutes. Hear about the damage it caused and be reminded why relay testing is so important.

9:45-11:45  Switchgear Maintenance, Protective Relay Basics, Testing, and Recommended Intervals, Cory Lang, L & S Electric, Inc.
Cory will cover recommendations for the basic operation, protection, inspection, maintenance & testing of various types of switchgear used in applications below 600V.

11:45-12:00  Discussion and Recap the "Take-aways", Bob Sewell, MMUA

Registration Fee

Member Rate: $465 per person
Non-member Rate: $690 per person
NOTE: Registration fee increases $50 on March 20.

Fee includes: workshop tuition, materials, refreshment breaks, lunch on Wednesday and a certificate of attendance. Participants are responsible for all transportation and lodging.

Deadline to register is March 30, 2021.

Cancellation Policy

MMUA will issue a refund (less $30 per person) for cancellation of an advance registration, provided MMUA is notified by 4:30 pm on March 30, 2021. Sorry, no refunds issued for cancellations after March 30.

Hotel Information

MMUA has negotiated reduced room rates starting at $108/night, not including tax. Please call the hotel directly to make reservation and ask for the "MMUA-Generation School" room block.

Certificates

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Watch for an email notification from MMUA after the event.
