Energy Efficiency / Renewables: General

Minnesota's municipal utilities have a long history of involvement with renewable energy. In the early part of the 20th century, several MMUA members put local resources to work by harnessing hydropower to provide for their citizens' electric service needs. When allocations of federal hydropower became available, municipal utilities eagerly signed up, even though this resource was not a low-cost option at the time.

Minnesota's renewable energy standard is based in significant part on a proposal developed by MMUA. Renewable energy continues to provide an increasing amount of the energy used in our state. We will continue to see additional renewable development, under current state law, until reaching a level of at least 25 percent of energy sold in the state by the year 2025.

While municipal utilities are often referred to as locally-regulated, energy efficiency and renewable energy laws generally apply to all utilities. Explore this section of our website for a more thorough understanding of what these laws are and how they affect municipal utilities.
