$115 million in state matching funds signed into law by Governor Walz

April 19, 2023

Governor Walz signed HF 1656 into law yesterday, March 18, 2023. The bill provides $115 million to help Minnesota utilities and other state entities pursue federal grants by creating a fund that will provide matching state funds for federal grants.

Because the bill became effective the day following enactment, matching funds are available as of today, April 19. Examples of Minnesota municipal utility projects seeking federal grants under this program in Minnesota include:

-A grant for equipment to identify the source of power outages near a hospital.

-Upgrades of systems to prevent outages and restore power faster.

-Funds to upgrade controls at substations for better reliability, efficiency, and safety.
