Reasonable Suspicion Training and Understanding the Designated Employer Representative (DER) Role
Maintaining a safe and compliant workplace is a shared responsibility. To support this, we are offering Reasonable Suspicion Training designed specifically for front line supervisors, crew leaders, and other personnel who play a critical role in identifying and addressing potential drug and alcohol use in the workplace. This training can equip you to:
- Understand applicable rules and regulations (including DOT requirements)
- Recognize the physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indications of probable alcohol misuse and use of controlled substances
- Approach employees professionally and respectfully
- Initiate the reasonable suspicion process, including required documentation and follow-up steps
- Help ensure compliance with testing procedures and protect the safety of all employees
- Consider outcomes of failing an alcohol or drug test
Role and Responsibility of the Designated Employer Representative
The Designated Employer Representative (DER) is the individual authorized by the organization to:
- Receive test results from drug and alcohol testing programs
- Make decisions regarding testing and removal from duty when necessary
- Coordinate compliance with federal and organizational policies
- Act as the primary contact for all matters related to drug and alcohol testing
Who should attend this training
- Anyone that supervises or manages employees that are commercial vehicle operators or work in a related safety sensitive position
- Anyone in an HR role that is responsible for the administration of the drug testing policy

This training is complimentary for MMUA members. Training will be conducted virtually and space is limited to the first 75 registrants.
