Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved with advocacy efforts through MMUA. From contributing to our political action fund to traveling to St. Paul and Washington DC for meetings with delegates, MMUA members can make their voices heard on behalf of municipal utilities across the state and the country.

The list below offers a range of options for engagement. If you would like to work on a specific issue or want to learn more about MMUA's lobbying efforts, please reach out to Kent Sulem and Bill Black

Municipal Utilities Action Fund

Supporting the Municipal Utilities Action Fund (MUAF) helps us educate legislators, share timely messages beyond the Capitol, and ensure hometown utilities are at the state policy table with cooperatives and investor-owned utilities.

Your donations ensure our lobbyists can be present at events where legislators gather. In these settings, we have unique opportunities to engage with lawmakers and raise our issues. To make a contribution to MUAF, please click here.

The Capitol Letter

The Capitol Letter is written by our government relations staff and focuses on the latest legislative information of interest to municipal utilities. This newsletter is regularly emailed to subscribers during the legislative session. If you are an MMUA member and would like to receive this newsletter, contact Rita Kelly.

Government Relations Advisory Group

The Government Relations Advisory Group (GRAG) is a weekly digital meeting held during each legislative session. Open to any regular and affiliate MMUA member interested in the goings-on at the Capitol, the GRAG covers MMUA's legislative strategy and actions, the political landscape surrounding our positions, and updates on our national policy efforts in Washington DC. Legislative Conference

MMUA’s Legislative Conference provides a critical opportunity for municipal utilities to directly inform and influence state lawmakers. It seems every session is a busy one for municipal utilities, and we have to work hard to make sure our voice is heard above the noise of long and often contentious sessions. Any public official will tell you having people in the room gets their attention. A strong turnout ensures that our message is heard.

Our 2025 conference will be held on January 28–29, 2025. See the event webpage for more information.

Regional Meetings

Join the MMUA government relations team and peers from your region to discuss the implications of new laws; explore opportunities; and network with others committed to protecting, promoting, and strengthening hometown utilities. Registration is free for these events, typically held after the legislative session ends.

Encourage your whole commission to attend and learn about how commissioners can help champion hometown utilities. Click here to learn more.

APPA Legislative Rally

MMUA annually leads a contingent of municipal utility professionals and policymakers to the APPA Legislative Rally in Washington DC. This event is usually held in the February/March time frame and is a great opportunity to join municipal utilities from across the country in advocating on behalf of public power utilities.

The next rally will be held February 24-26, 2025. See publicpower.org for more information.
