Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Mechanic performs complex maintenance, repair, and inspection work on City vehicles, equipment, and generators. This role supports departmental operations, ensures fleet safety and reliability, and assists with seasonal and emergency activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced maintenance and repair on gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic, electrical, cooling, fuel, and suspension systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical issues; conduct major tune-ups using diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Operate welding equipment, hand and power tools, and heavy trucks and equipment.
  • Develop and manage a preventative maintenance program; inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with maintenance standards.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and written records of labor, parts, and maintenance activities; manage inventory of tools, parts, fluids, and filters.
  • Coordinate contract repairs and state/federal vehicle inspections; assist with equipment replacement planning and vehicle specifications.
  • Support other departments, including snow removal and emergency operations.
  • Monitor and enforce safety practices; maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Stay current with new equipment, maintenance methods, and required certifications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical training in mechanics plus two years of experience, or five years of equivalent mechanic experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Minnesota Class B CDL with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements (or ability to obtain within six months).
  • Minnesota DOT Mandatory Inspection Program Certification (or ability to obtain).
  • CPR certification (or ability to obtain).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience operating light and heavy equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, fleet maintenance, diagnostic software, pump maintenance, and OSHA safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with fleet management systems.
  • Ability to speak or understand conversational Spanish or Somali.

Physical & Interpersonal Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively, work independently or on a team, and perform under stress.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds, work in varied weather conditions, and operate vehicles and equipment safely.
