The Tree Trimming Workshop will be hosted by Elk River Municipal Utilities this year.

Tree work has inherent dangers. To ensure everyone's safety, it is vital that personnel are properly trained and comply with applicable safety standards including OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.268, 1910.269 and 1910.333, and ANSI Z133.1-2000.

This is an opportunity to sharpen your skills and increase your knowledge through classroom and hands-on instruction in the field.

This workshop is intended for any city/utility employee responsible for any type of tree work. This training is not just for lineworkers.
Training will be led by MMUA's Jake Kuntz, Jay Reading, and Mike Grabow. All three bring a wealth of tree care experience and have attended a specialized tree work training course. Plus, Jake is a licensed Minnesota tree inspector and a certified arborist.

  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Weather-appropriate, high visibility clothing
  • Chaps
  • Chainsaw in protective case and extra chain 
  • Mixed gas, in approved container
  • Chainsaw safety and maintenance
  • Overview of tree species; best time of year to cut them
  • Best practices to prevent the spread of disease
  • Proper way to trim a tree and how much to trim
  • Tree cuts and proper techniques on felling trees
  • How to be an effective team and work safely on the ground and in the bucket
  • Basic rigging for dropping limbs safely
