Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association, along with our partners at Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA), are pleased to offer the 2026 Underground School.

The Underground School features two general session and six hands-on training sessions that participants will rotate through.

Multi-session classes

  • Grounding and use of phasing sticks
  • Switchgear maintenance and operation
  • Directional drill operations
  • Transformer connections and rotation
  • Accident scenario
  • 200-Amp Terminations

General sessions

  • Considerations for cable pulling and installation: This presentation will include the characteristics that go into designing an underground utility cable and what the manufacturing process looks like.  We will discuss proper cable preparation for termination and proper handling and inspection of cable reels when receiving at your location.  Preferred installation practices and common failure mechanisms that occur during installation.
  • Accident in the workplace: Anytime a severe injury or worst-case scenario, fatality, happens at your workplace, it is felt by everyone. Hear firsthand how this fatal accident occurred, the events leading up to it, the long-lasting effects, and what was learned from it.

Member: $535 per person
Non-member: $635 per person
All fees increase $50 on April 4, 2026.
Registration fee includes: tuition, materials and supplies, refreshment breaks, and lunch on Wednesday and Thursday. Participants are responsible for their own personal protective equipment (PPE) and lodging.

Participants earn hours for attendance. Continuing education information can be found in the participant's Member Compass after the event.

MMUA will issue a refund (less $50 processing fee per person) provided MMUA is notified of the cancellation by 4:30 pm on April 16, 2026. Refunds issued to credit cards will be subject to an additional 3% fee. No refunds issued after April 16.
