Position Description: The City of Fairmont is looking for a Wastewater Operator to help run and maintain its wastewater treatment facility. This position is responsible for monitoring treatment processes, operating and maintaining equipment, performing lab testing, and adjusting operations to ensure high‑quality effluent. Additionally, it is tasked with maintaining accurate operational records and carrying out functions to keep the facility clean, safe, and compliant. The typical work schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday and additional hours, including call duty, may be required.

Minimum qualifications for this position include a high school diploma (or equivalent) and a Class D Wastewater Operator’s License (or the ability to obtain it within one year of hire). Preferred qualifications include a two-year vocational college degree, two years’ experience working with municipal wastewater systems or similar industrial facilities, and a Class C Wastewater Operator’s License.

Successful candidates must also possess a valid Minnesota Class B Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements (or be able to obtain it shortly after hire), satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, and live within a 30-minute drive of Fairmont in order to be able to respond to off-duty calls in a timely manner.

The salary range for this position is $38.11/hour – $48.32/hour, DOQ.
