Organization Overview

The City of Madison, MN owns it electric distribution system which is operated very efficiently and progressively, as well. The following are some statistics that show that the Madison electric utility is suited for commercial expansion within the city. POWER SUPPLY: The city is a preference customer of the Western Area Power Administration and receives most of its power from the efficient, clean, renewable, and very affordable hydro facilities on the Missouri River. Any remaining power needs are met by Missouri River Energy Services. RELIABILITY: The city is fed from transmission lines that emanate from two different bulk substations. These lines can be transferred remotely through automated switches. They also have two local distribution substations that provide redundancy in the event of a problem with one or the other substation or feeder line. AFFORDABILITY: Presently, the city's retail electric rates to its commercial customers are 10% below the state average. This has been a long-standing trend due to its affordable power supply arrangement and city ownership in the distribution facilities. The power suppliers are indicating no significant increases in the foreseeable future. Capacity of the electric system presently, the city has excess electric capacity in both substation facilities and distribution line to easily serve a commercial or group of commercial customers without having to upgrade it system. The property available is less than a block from the city's downtown substation, which was rebuilt and expanded in the year 2000.
