Electric Lead Journey Lineworker City of Buffalo
Leads onsite operations to ensure safety, quality, and task completion during the scope of the project. Delegates tasks,equipment, and ensures safety in daily operations in the field.
This is a technical and responsible position with the objective that a Journey Lineworker can construct, operate, andmaintain every aspect of the electric distribution network. Journey Lineworker competencies include all aspects ofworking around energized or non-energized high and low voltage electric distribution infrastructure.
Examples of Duties
Project Leadership & Coordination
- Assign daily tasks to field staff and monitor performance.
- Lead field operations, ensuring safety, quality, and timely project completion.
- Collaborate with engineers and supervisors on project planning and design.
- Coordinate project timelines and resource allocation with stakeholders.
- Act as a liaison between field staff and management to communicate updates and needs.
- Recommend materials, tools, and strategies to improve efficiency.
- Provide input for annual budget planning, identifying critical projects and material needs.
Electrical System Operations
- Install, operate, and maintain overhead and underground electric lines and equipment.
- Perform metering, staking, pole framing, setting, climbing, stringing/sagging, and transformer work.
- Conduct trenching, conduit placement, conductor termination, fault finding, and troubleshooting.
- Execute switching orders in substations; analyze fault currents and adjust relay settings.
- Work on energized lines using rubber gloves, sleeves, and hot line tools for 15-kV systems.
Safety, Compliance & Maintenance
- Ensure compliance with APPA, OSHA, NESC, NEC, ANSI, and other safety regulations.
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and safety equipment; report issues and ensure readiness.
- Ensure all projects meet specifications; recommend field adjustments as needed.
- Maintain accurate GIS records and documentation for system changes.
Customer Service & Communication
- Respond to customer inquiries and complaints professionally and promptly.
- Communicate effectively with utility personnel, contractors, and the public.
Training & Mentorship
- Guide and train apprentice linemen; review work for safety and quality.
- Provide feedback on apprentice performance and development.
Administrative & Support Duties
- Complete administrative tasks including time sheets, vehicle logs, and records.
- Participate in on-call rotation for water utility emergencies and support other departments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Three (3) years of Journeyman Lineman experience.
- Three (3) years of project and construction lead experience.
- Post-secondary vocational training or certification preferred.
- State of Minnesota Journey Lineworker Certification.
- Valid Class A or B CDL with tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Lineworker experience in a government or municipal setting.
